I’ve mentioned this before, but it bears mentioning again: the hardest part of my day is between the hours of 4:30 and 6:30pm. Dinner time. What to make and how do I do it when Maja is more often than not at my feet, arms stretched up saying “mama, up up up”? One cannot cook safely with a toddler in one’s arms.
Lately I’ve found a few solutions:
- put her in her booster seat with the tray and give her some cut apple or grated cheese or something else to munch on
- put her in her booster seat and give her something to colour
- cook ahead of time using the slow-cooker
- involve her in the cooking
#4 can be iffy at times. I have let her stir things in bowls, but sometimes my holding the bowl is not tolerated — I fear then that the entire bowl of whatever is going to land on the floor. So, the other evening (Wednesday, I believe) I had Maja help me with making pizza. Maja LOVES pizza. She helped me roll out the dough (somewhat helpful) and she cleaned the mushrooms for me (VERY helpful — she even destemmed them). She also helped eat some of the grated cheese.
It’s a constant challenge. And you laugh now, right? Because what the hell am I going to do when I’ve got 2 of these small creatures at my feet in the evenings saying “mama, up up!”
