back in the saddle

Ya’ll I NEED to lose this baby weight. I keep saying (bitchin’ & moaning, more like) this again and again and again… and even I’m getting bored of saying it. Yes, I lost a few pounds earlier this spring, but then ‘birthday season’ hit and it all came back. I want to lose 10 lbs. This should NOT be that hard, dammit. Mind you it’s an uphill battle — the weight is on and I’m getting older, so it takes twice as long and I have to work twice as hard to get it off.

I used to be so active: biking, yoga, swimming… now all I do is haul laundry up and down the stairs while simultaneously carrying two children. It’s not that exciting.

BUT, Memorial Day weekend is coming up and that means that the outdoor pool in our ‘hood is opening. This is good: I can go swim laps. This is bad: I do not want to be seen in a bathing suit. Come to think of it, no one else probably wants to see me in a bathing suit either. Perhaps I can buy a scuba suit to go swimming in? Then again, if I’m underwater no one can really get a good sense of my thigh-size either… I may get in the pool and never come out.

Of course, this isn’t realistic so my latest answer is to get back on my bike, my ROAD bike. I dug it out (literally. it was buried) of the basement. Sad little bike — I haven’t ridden it in years. I used to ride centuries  on this bike! I pumped up the tires, put the pedals back on, straighted the handle bars, got on … and oh my god this bike is scary. It didn’t help, of course, that there was a group of guys in their mid-20s sitting on the porch across the street watching the spectacle of a mid-30-year-old woman trying to get her ride back. I wobbled. I rode slowly. I got my balance. I rode more quickly. All was good. I did not fall!

So this morning I rode my bike in to work as a ‘test run’. It took me 5 minutes to get to work! Next week, then, there is no excuse for me not to ride my bike to the pool — it will probably take me all of 10 minutes to get there straight from work. Then I can swim my laps, ride home and still be back in time to get dinner ready.

At this rate I should lose those 10lbs by September — just in time for long pants. sigh.

  1. I’m so glad you decided to start riding again. I love my bike. I use it mostly for errands around town. It’s such fun.

  2. You *know* how much I love my bike. I get to ride it every sunny day and it takes me about 20 minutes each way. Biking is just great!

Your determination is inspiring and contagious. I know you’ll lose those 10 pounds.

  3. Dude, just one thing:

Love your body. It housed those two fantabulous angels into the world. It will age. By all means, go get as healthy and energetic as you can – and, speaking as a short woman, I say, rock your intrinsic willowiness, since you’ve got it.

BUT!!! Be kinder (even in a girly blog) to yourself when you talk about your physical state. I am (however uncharacteristically) serious. Plus, I saw how cute you looked in that skirt last week that made Maja want to wear one. So stop with that.

  4. Y’know, going swimming at the municipal pool actually tends to improve my body image. There’s always plenty of totally bizarre looking people and only a few gorgeous babes.

However, wetsuits are quite slimming if you decide to go that route! ;)

  5. I understand the desire to stay in shape, but I believe you might be under-estimating how much you simply love cycling and swimming, not to mention just making time for yourself. Get back on the bike, get in the pool, and if you lose the weight great. If not, so what. You will still be healthier and happier(more balanced) to be doing things you enjoy and making some time for yourself. We can figure out a way to make the schedule work either way. We always do.
