on being 3

study in stripes This is a 3-year-old. EVERYTHING about this picture says “I’m 3”. Let me give you a run down:

  • messy hair — I was not allowed to comb it. I WAS allowed to move the 2 barrettes around to keep the hair out of her face.
  • clothing — note the stripes. Maja came downstairs in the morning and proudly held out the clothes she had chosen. This is the first time she’s ever picked out her own clothing. She’s even wearing striped underpants. I let her wear the outfit even though it made my brain seize every time I looked at her.
  • hotdog. with ketchup — need I say more?
  • a balloon — if there’s a fair and there are children then there will be balloons and mine will have one tied to her wrist.
  • pink sandal shoes. with flowers.
  • purple raincoat.

Don’t you just want to give her a great big hug and say “I love you Maja!”

  1. I think the stripes better than all black attire, despite the brain seizures. At least she’s colorful!

  2. Wouldn’t it be fun to dress like a 3 yr old yourself one day? Oddly freeing.

  3. There’s a picture of me from that age in which I am wearing a plaid skirt and a blouse (70’s polyester and wide collar) with a cowgirl theme on it. Clash city! I asked my mother how she could let me go out like that. Her reply was, “You chose it yourself. It was your favourite skirt and your favourite blouse. You wore that outfit often.”

So, be sure to keep that image so that you can show Maja how you didn’t want to stifle her creativity. ;-)

  4. Or do you just keep the ILY and direct it instead to “Richard-as-a-blond-female-toddler”- because, at least in this picture, that’s SO his face. Don’t you think?

  5. Katia,

Once in a blue moon, I check out your blog & I just had to comment on the last two entries. I remember when my Maya starting insisting on dressing herself. It’s hilarious how they have to match everything from hair clips to underwear. She still insists that if the top & pants are both stripey, then they match & I have to wear sunglasses. Now, at the age of five, I’ve resigned myself to letting her pick her outfit every day. It’s very freeing.

Also, Avent bottles contain BPA? What! I’ve been using these for Ezra kind of naively assuming that they must be ok because they’re European. In Europe, the whole plastic toy phenomenom isn’t an issue because they won’t allow toxic plastics. Now I have to rethink everything. Ugh, how annoying. What are you going to use instead? Of course, Maya used these bottles for years.
