bento adventures

It’s been about 2 weeks now that I’ve had my Mr. Bento lunchjar. For those of you who haven’t been following my gastronomical adventure on Flickr, let me tell you — you’re missing out. I’m really having fun with Mr. Bento: I look forward to lunch; I snack less; I have lost 4 lbs.

I have a few bento rules that I now follow which came about mostly by happenstance and partly because of an article I read which outlined some success tips for keeping weight in check (note: not a diet). This article mentioned that eating patterns (here I go again, avoiding the word DIET — because people so often associate that word with weight loss, when, in reality it has to do with a regimen of what you eat) which include foods high in water content are more likely to help you keep your weight in check. That means eating a lot of soups, salads, fruits, veggies, etc.

My bento rules, therefore, are

  • put a soup or yoghurt in the bottom (small) container. The largest container is for salad. The medium container has protein and veggies. The top (smallest) container has fruit and sometimes a muffin.
  • only consume what is in the bento while at work (no side-snacking!)

Of course these are not hard and fast rules. If they were, then I’d rebel and go ballistic by filling each container with say, chocolate cake or jellybeans. Highly delicious… not so nutritious.

Yesterday I attempted to further my bento adventures by trying to find some fun bento accessories in Chinatown. I was mightily unsuccessful. I wandered for an hour and went into almost every little ditty shop in Chinatown and found NO bento accessories. Nada. Of course one could argue that I was in Chinatown, not Japantown… but how does that explain the high incidence of Vietnamese places?!? Really.

On the upside, I was successful in finding a super-cute hat at Macy’s when I cut through the store.

  1. The hat looks great on you and congrats on the 4 pounds. I’m intrigued by Mr. Bento. Maybe part of my problem is that I eat too much of the right things.

  4. The link to the article, The Secrets of Thin People, is here:

If that link stops working, do a search on Realsimple.com for “thin people” — the article was originally published in April 2006.
