in the deep dark winter

I love plants and gardening, as you may have guessed from my various escapades with my outdoor plants. I also have a huge collection of indoor plants which survive my constant abuse: I routinely forget to water them — nonetheless, they survive.

One of my favourite things to have growing in the house during the long, cold months of January and February are forced paperwhite bulbs. I received my first gift of paperwhite bulbs from my violin teacher, Ed Gartshore, at the age of 6 or 7. He presented these delicate flowers to me in an old coffee can filled with stones. He must have had at least 50 of these cans lining the sunny windows of his studio.

I usually get either paperwhites or some other bulb (like the amaryllis bulb I got from Elyn 2 years ago) every year. This year the paperwhites came from my in-laws, Jane & Tom. The first bloom appeared on Sunday evening and their sweet scent is now filling my kitchen.
