house of cards

Filed under: family, madeleine — freeformkatia @ 1:56 pm

Our household these days is something akin to a carefully constructed house of cards. It’s up, it’s beautiful, it’s temporary and the slightest tremor will cause it to come crashing down around our heads. People, we had a tremors last night.

1. Our nanny called in sick for today.

2. When I went in at 3am to feed Madeleine the second tremor hit. I picked her up and when her cheek brushed my skin my first thought was: uh-oh, we’ve got a fever. DAMMIT!!! I didn’t bother to take her temperature, I didn’t need to. I know fevers. I was able to get Mads back to sleep and miraculously I went back to sleep, too.

Her fever at 7am registered 101.8F. Enter the tylenol. And the phone call to the pediatrician. Then the juggling act began: Richard went off to work and I stayed home. Then Richard came home at lunch time so I could go in to work for a 1/2 day.

I pray that the rest of us don’t get sick; that the nanny feels better; and that Madeleine bounces back. She was so fussy and irritable… poor thing. I just carried her around in the sling all morning because she didn’t want to be put down.

  4. Oh I know this all too well. It’s when the fever hits 105, it’s 2am and you have to go to the ER and you have work at 7am that it really gets fun.
