No. Not me. It’s better then that (because I didn’t give birth!): my closest friend, Elyn, had her baby on December 10th. Clare Eleanor weighed in at 7 lbs 10 oz. She’s super blonde (and super cute):

You can see more pictures of this sweet baby here.

It was strange to talk to Elyn that first evening after Clare entered the world. All of a sudden Elyn was ‘different’. I had talked to her earlier that afternoon and she was the Usual Elyn, but by the evening she was Different Elyn. She gained a new role as mom and it freaked me out.

Elyn has been my closest friend for over 20 years.  We’ve been through a lot together: high school, driving lessons (we’re both still alive!), first boyfriends, graduations, weddings, first ‘real’ jobs, and now babies. Elyn’s dragged me around a zillion ski trails (including one memorable trip to the top of mountains. In the winter. On crappy borrowed skis. I complained ALOT.) and I’ve dragged her to more classical music concerts then I can remember. It’s an equal-education relationship.

We met in gym class in grade 9 and became friends  after I forced her to hang out with me. ha ha. We lost touch after high school as we went to separate universities and developed other friends. Then, in 1998 while I was at McGill I happened to bump into Elyn’s sister. We chatted for a bit and when I mentioned that I was moving out to Vancouver, Elyn’s sister told me that she was living out there too. After I moved in the fall of that year, I finally gathered up the courage to give Elyn a call and I’m so glad I did (except for the skiing excursion up the mountain. still not sure about that.)

So, now we enter the next 20-year phase of our lives: kids at home. After that we have the 20plus-year phase of: kids not at home and when-do-we-get-to-retire?!?

  1. Congrats to Elyn! (am I one of the “other” friends that you made in the 1996-98 era?)

  2. What a beautiful little girl – looks like her beautiful mother!
    Congratulations to the proud parents.
