when a tree falls in west philly

Richard and I were rudely awoken at 3:23am when a very bright flash and simultaneously accompanying BOOM occurred outside. It was loud. And bright. At first I thought lightening, but discounted that because the boom happened at the same time. Then I thought that maybe the lightening hit something nearby… but there wasn’t any more lightening or booming. My next thought was explosion. Richard said that it sounded like a transformer blew — but we don’t have any on our street!

So, Richard went outside at 3:30am to take a look — thinking that maybe someone’s house was on fire. Turns out a big huge London Plane Tree from Clark Park fell, hitting a street light on the corner of our street, taking down some overhead wires, and crushing a car in the process.

Sorry the pictures are blurry. And, thankfully, it’s not our car.
